The Shield, created by Hevelius in 1684 to honor the Polish King John III Sobieski. One of the few constellations named after a real person.
Observing Highlights
Contains the Wild Duck Cluster (M11), one of the richest and most compact open clusters known. Lies in the Scutum Star Cloud, a bright section of the Milky Way.
