Mythology
The Great Bear, one of the most ancient constellations. In Greek mythology, Zeus transformed the nymph Callisto into a bear to protect her from Hera's jealousy. The Big Dipper forms the bear's hindquarters and tail.
Observing Highlights
The Big Dipper asterism is the most recognized pattern in the northern sky. Contains M81 and M82 (Bode's Galaxy and Cigar Galaxy), M97 (Owl Nebula), M101 (Pinwheel Galaxy), and M108. Mizar-Alcor is a famous naked-eye double.
