Descripción
Hoedus II (Eta Aurigae) is a blue estrella de secuencia principal of tipo espectral B3V at magnitude 3.17 en Auriga. Located a unos 219 años luz de la Tierra, it has a temperatura superficial of roughly 17,000 K and a luminosity about 955 veces la solar. It is one of the three 'Kids' stars near Capella, forming a small triangle with Iota and Zeta Aurigae.
Consejos de Observación
Look for Eta Aur as part of the Kids asterism just south of brilliant Capella. It appears as a blue-white star, contrasting with the orange Iota Aur nearby. The Kids form a small, attractive triangle visible in the same binocular field as Capella. Mejor observación from November through April during Auriga's evening prominence.
Historia
The Latin name Hoedus II means 'the second kid' (baby goat), paired with Zeta Aur (Hoedus I). Together with Epsilon Aur, these stars have been called 'the Kids' since ancient Roman times, carried by the mythological she-goat Capella. Ptolemy and other classical astronomers described them as stars near the Charioteer's hand.
Datos Curiosos
Despite their close apparent proximity, the three Kids stars are at very different distances — Eta Aur at 219 años luz, Zeta Aur at unos 790 años luz, and Epsilon Aur at roughly 2,000 años luz. Their grouping is purely a line-of-sight effect.
