Description
Wazn is an orange giant of spectral type K2III at magnitude 3.12 in Columba. Located about 87 light-years from Earth, it has a luminosity of roughly 56 times solar. It is the second brightest star in the small southern constellation of the Dove.
Observing Tips
Wazn lies south of Lepus and Orion in the constellation Columba. It pairs with the brighter Phact (Alpha Col) to define the Dove. It is a warm orange star. Best observed January through March.
History
The name Wazn comes from the Arabic 'al-wazn,' meaning 'the weight.' Columba represents the dove sent by Noah from the Ark. It is a relatively modern constellation, created from stars formerly assigned to Canis Major.
Fun Facts
Columba is one of the few constellations with a Biblical rather than mythological origin story, representing Noah's dove that brought back an olive branch to signal the end of the Flood.
