About Mu Lep

Description

Mu Leporis is a blue-white giant of spectral type B9IIIpHgMn at magnitude 3.31 in Lepus. Located about 186 light-years from Earth, it is a mercury-manganese star — a chemically peculiar star with enhanced concentrations of these heavy elements in its atmosphere.

Observing Tips

Mu Lep lies in the body of Lepus, the Hare below Orion. It is a white star among the modest group of stars forming the constellation. Best observed December through March.

History

Mu Leporis has no widely used traditional name. Mercury-manganese stars like Mu Lep are important for studying how atomic diffusion can concentrate rare elements in stellar atmospheres over time.

Fun Facts

Mercury-manganese stars have surface concentrations of mercury up to 100,000 times the solar value — not because the star contains more mercury, but because the calm, non-convective atmosphere allows these heavy atoms to float upward and accumulate in the visible layers.
